Object: NGC 55
NGC 55 is a member of the Sculptor Group of Galaxies and lies a mere 7 million light-years distant, making it one of the closest members of the Local Group. Prominent members of the Sculptor Group include NGC 253, NGC 247 and NGC 300. Spanning nearly 70,000 light-years across, this irregular galaxy is viewed nearly edge-on and displays a wealth of detail in dust lanes, pinkish star forming HII expanses, and young, blue star cluster regions.
